  NC Notable for 07/27/06

Dr. Larry Wheeler

Dr. Larry WheelerThis week’s notable, Dr. Larry Wheeler, is a genius in melding art, politics, and business.

Since 1994 He has been director of the NC Museum of Art, ushering in a cultural renaissance for the state. Wheeler put North Carolina on the map with blockbuster art exhibitions that attracted national attention and large crowds.

A Florida native, Dr. Wheeler, has degrees in history and French from the University of Georgia. He was marketing director for the NC Symphony and served as deputy secretary for the department of Cultural Resources.

Wheeler brought the Rodin, Monet and School of Paris artist exhibits to the museum and secured a coup with a major donation of Rodin sculptures. He is now overseeing a $74 million building expansion program and has even grander dreams for our museum and the arts community.

For passion for art, his grand dreams, and what he has accomplished we make Dr. Lawrence Wheeler this week’s NC Notable.
