Clyde Edgerton
One newspaper describes writer Clyde Edgerton as an ”American treasure.”
Edgerton grew in Bethesda, near Durham, as an only child – yet he had 23 aunts and uncles. A degree in English from UNC Chapel Hill preceded a stint as an Air Force fighter pilot. Settling down to teach high school English, he earned his doctorate. Upon listening to famed southern writer Eudora Welty read a story on television, Edgerton set his mind on writing.
Eight books later Edgerton’s numerous awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and North Carolina Award for Literature. Two books have become films. Edgerton is an accomplished musician and songwriter and teaches at UNC Wilmington. He has three children. He says he wants to finish ten more novels and to help hungry people through the North Carolina Food Bank.
“I’m most proud of my novels and the fact that people I don’t know read them,” he says. For vivid characters and engrossing dialogue that dazzle readers we salute Clyde Edgerton as this week’s NC Notable.
