Barbara Mulkey
Barbara Mulkey was one of the first women to graduate from NC State in civil engineering. Starting her company around a kitchen table, one of her founding principles is that employees shouldn’t have to apologize for an unusual schedule, so she promotes flexible work schedules. Her family-friendly philosophy earns employee loyalty in an industry not always known for flexibility
Today, Mulkey Engineering is a multi-million dollar engineering company that specializes in transportation, land surveying, and water resources across the Southeast.
It is not surprising that her top priorities are her marriage and thee children. Barbara now devotes much of her energy in relationship building, as well as giving back to others. She is active in the arts, especially literature and music, and is helping develop a leadership academy for ministers and laypeople in the Methodist Church.
