Jesse Helms

Jesse Helms For thirty years Jesse Helms served as the Senator from North Carolina.

The son of the Monroe chief of police, Helms came to Raleigh as a sports reporter for the News and Observer, then editor of The Raleigh Times. He got his start in politics with Willis Smith’s Senate campaign. After twelve years as head of the State Bankers Association, Jesse was catapulted onto the public stage as the voice of Viewpoint, the nightly editorial on WRAL-TV. Helms became a Republican, started The Congressional club and, in 1972, was the first Republican elected to the Senate in the 20th century.

Known as “Senator No” because of his opposition to big government, communism, social programs, abortion, and the State Department, his office excelled in constituent service.

In the Senate he headed Agriculture, then the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee before retiring in 2003. Ronald Reagan would never have become President without Helms’ support in 1976.

The essence of Southern gentility, Jesse Helms stood for what he believed and is truly an NC Notable.
