Dean Smith
College basketball wouldn’t be the same without Dean Smith. Dean played basketball at Kansas, then coached baseball, golf and basketball for the Air Force Academy before coming to UNC as assistant basketball coach.
Named head coach of the Tar Heels prior to the 1961-62 season, Smith led the cleanest and most innovative program anywhere with 879 wins in the next 36 years. His teams won 65 NCAA tournament victories, two national championships, and Dean coached the 1976 US Olympic team that won the gold. 96 percent of his players graduated, 50 played at the pro level, and he mentored many of today’s head coaches.
National coach of the year and induction into the basketball hall of fame are just two of many awards. In retirement he has written several books, and enjoys golf. His wife, five children, and six grandchildren are a great source of pleasure.
