Emily Herring Wilson
Poet and non-fiction writer Emily Herring Wilson of Winston-Salem is an activist for the arts and humanities. Wilson started writing poems and stories early in life. After getting her masters at Wake Forest University Wilson joined the faculty, also writing editorials for the Winston-Salem Journal.
While teaching classes and leading teaching workshops, Wilson also was a Poet in the Schools for the NC Arts Council. She founded various poetry organizations, started a publishing company, and created literature programs at Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
Wilson lectures on women’s issues and authored two books on the subject earning her the 1999 Mayflower Cup for best non-fiction book. Emily is a fellow of the MacDowell Colony and serves on the NC Writers Network and Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation boards. Wilson has three adult children and two grandsons.
Wilson says she’s most contented with her public conversations on literature and social justice. For both her community-mindedness and “exuberant” poetry, Emily Herring Wilson is truly an NC Notable.
