Kaye Gibbons

NC Notable Kaye Gibbons’ novels have been described as “addictively readable.”

Gibbons grew up in Rocky Mount then attended NC State and UNC at Chapel Hill. She struggles with bipolar disorder, but says she’s learned to use her manic phases to enhance creativity.

Kaye wrote her first of eight novels at age 26. Ellen Foster, earned the Sue Kaufman Prize for first fiction, a special citation from the Ernest Hemingway Foundation, became an Oprah Book Club selection, and was honored in London as one of the 20 greatest novels of the 20th century.

Her third novel won best fiction published by a writer under age 35, just one of the many awards has received. Gibbons is the youngest writer to receive a French knighthood.

Gibbons says writing is “the ability to forgo distractions…and to submit ones self to constant, ruthless self-criticism.” She lectures and travels extensively. Gibbons and her husband in Raleigh have three daughters.

For many reasons author Kaye Gibbons is an NC Notable.
