William Fields

William C. Fields III not only painted portraits of North Carolinians, he also painted a Pope.

This Fayetteville native was the first student to receive a Fine Arts degree from UNC, studied at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, then maintained a New York studio for 17-years. There Fields painted the late Pope Pius the Twelfth and European royalty. He was elected a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London.

 Fields’ portraits include New York Opera stars, society patrons and notable North Carolinians. Fields also played a prominent role in the NC Ballet Company, NC Symphony, NC Arts Council, and Associated Artists of North Carolina. He painted into his 80’s and recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

Fields said a good portrait always presents the “impact of a person’s character” and must tell something of the person’s place in life, not just their likeness.
