Tell us what's on your mind

Posted: Friday, August 22nd, 2003

Typically, we give you the topic and ask for your response. Let's give you an open forum to tell us what you are thinking...who knows, maybe you stimulate a topic for the next NC SPIN.

Suggestions: John Edwards' statement in New Hampshire that he cares nothing about re-election to the US Senate, the DOT mess and the response by SEANC head Dana Cope, lowering corporate taxes to stimulate business, the continued executions of death row inmates, or tee off and give us your spin.

Comments

Our campaign is committed to reaching out to voters. Public forums, like this one, are places where citizens who care about their communities debate the issues. We would like to hear from you and ask that you consider joining our campaign to bring better government to NC. Please review our press release, and I hope you will visit our website at http://www.ForFern.com and join our mailing list.

People Who Want Better Government

---Press Release---

Fern Shubert will seek the office
of Governor of North Carolina!

People Who Want Better Government announces that at the 7 p.m., August 26th, 2003, joint meeting of Sweet Union Republican Women’s Club and Mecklenburg Evening Republican Women’s Club, at the Captain’s Galley Restaurant on Hwy 74 in Matthews, Senator Fern Shubert will officially announce she will seek the office of Governor of North Carolina.

Senator Fern Shubert of Marshville (Union County), NC, will seek to be the first female Governor of North Carolina, focusing her campaign on jobs, education, and transportation. Sen. Shubert believes she is the candidate that can do the best job in bringing jobs to this state and is the only Republican candidate that can defeat Mike Easley.

Sen. Shubert states experience as a CPA and a legislator has given her the knowledge needed to pull the state out of the financial crisis into which the current leadership has led us. Shubert has served three terms as a Representative (1994, 1996, 2000) in the NC General Assembly. In 2002 she was elected to represent District 35 in the Senate and her Senate peers elected her to be the Senate Republican Whip, a significant honor that recognized her many achievements in the House.

"I want to be your Governor because I want to make things better for all the people of North Carolina. Most people know that if you keep doing the same thing and expect a different result, you're probably crazy. I believe most North Carolinians have figured out that they want different results from those they've seen under Mike Easley. When it comes to jobs, education, and roads, there is no doubt that we can do better. I am the candidate with the experience, vision, and conservative values to lead North Carolina citizens as we build a better future," Fern said. Information on Shubert's campaign can be found by going to www.ForFern.com. Fern urges everyone to compare her record on making positive changes that benefit the people of North Carolina with that of the other candidates.

Fern is married to Jerry J. Shubert, a retired Air Force Lt. Col., and together they have a son Lee R. Shubert. Fern has a stepdaughter Dr. Tamara Shubert Hayward, and two grandchildren. Sen. Shubert's father was born in Waxhaw, NC; her mother, in Wingate, NC. Fern's family ties to this area go back before the Revolution. Fern graduated from Duke University in 1969, passing the CPA exam before graduating. Sen. Shubert has won awards and recognition for helping small businesses and education. In 1996 NCEITA gave her the first award for government service it ever gave a Representative. The US Small Business Administration recognized her as the Accountant who did the most for small business in the nation in 1997. The Charlotte Christian News said her alternative certification legislation was the most important education development of 1998. And this year, she succeeded in ending the use of portfolios for teacher certification, despite Governor Easley's veto of her bill.

I agree that the DOT made a major mistake in handling the overpayment of salaries to employees. I do not have a problem with them having to repay the money to the State. But, I do have a problem when school teachers were allowed to keep bonus money unearned last year and not the media nor Gov. Easley batted an eyelid. Yes, I am a state worker also! It is time for the ridiculous practices of special treatment for teachers and General Assembly workers to stop!

I would like to hear more issues concrening our states envoironmental issues. It seems there are considerably more sick people around than in most other states I've visited. Especially the young people. At one point, a few years ago, the tv comretials claimed they would be disclosing the environmental status of our state and how it relates to the various health issues facing our citizens. Then, suddenly, the program was silenced. Shortly thereafter, we began seeing the effects of NAFTA as some of our industries began heading overseas. Does this mean that they took the more severe polution producers with them and our air and water will eventually be clean again, or were these issues just abruptly swept under the rug for the convience of our polititians?
Ignorance IS bliss.

Many thanks to Tom Campbell for being a superb moderator and serious student of NC politics and governmental affairs.

The cure for NC economic woes cannot be discovered by only looking internally into NC state initiatives. This latest downturn has to do with global economic phenomena, not the least of which is the deep influence of the radical islamist inspired 'War On Western Culture'. Far out of the control and purview of local politicians I am certain.

All the legislature can really do is to rearrange the 'chairs on the deck of the titanic'.

I would suggest perhaps a Sunday 'NC Spin' session where leading NC economists might discuss a range of possibilities and persepctives on what might be reasonably accomplished by way of NC state initiatives. Please no politicians !

Allow me to commend to readers the monumental accomplishments of James M. Buchanan, 1986 Nobel Laureate in Economics. The following website further details his extraordinary contributions to the subject: http://almaz.com/nobel/economics/1986a.html

John Edwards is not really running for president, he knows he can't really win,
but he can get face-time and celebrity.
This, as he has proven, he can spin into opportunity, say a juicy cabinet
post, or worse. Considering the current
Clintonic vacuum in the Dem party, all
it takes is a pretty face and a clean
police blotter. He knows he can't win his senate seat back, either; for once the Republicans have managed to produce a decent candidate in Richard Burr (will miracles never cease?).
John Edwards never even voted before he was approached for candidacy, furthermore, he is a leech-vampire for having grown rich by helping to destroy OUR tobacco industry. Thanks alot pretty face over an empty suit, handmaiden to Tom Dash-to-hell, who stands in the way of corrective legislation the same way George Wallace stood in the school room door!
Maybe he can host a game show when next year ends, his elected political career is over. We can call it
"Causal Roulette", and the winning trial lawyer gets to sue God for having started all this in the first place.

Tho I am a registered Democrat, it makes my blood boil to see/hear how Senator Edwards is "running" for President. When is he going to be a Senator. Since he was elected Senator this is all I have read is his running for President. In my opinion he cannot be both!

John Edwards' statement in New Hampshire that he cares nothing about re-election to the US Senate.... Why should he start caring now? He hasn't represented anyone but himself since he was elected. It's about time the good people of North Carolina give this 'bill clinton wannabe' the bums' rush.

This is not last minute mud slinging. This is real and it has just happened.

Your help is urgently needed. Please take a few minutes to go to the link below and read the information and documentation you find there. Then help us take action! I apologize for the disturbing content, but the vast majority of NC's residents are not aware of this information at this time. THIS INFORMATION MUST REACH OUR CITIZENS BEFORE TUESDAY NOV. 2

1. Our incumbent Governor, Mike Easley (D-NC), has supported policies that have given hundreds of thousands of driver licenses to illegal aliens thus attracting them to NC.

2. He has been confronted by his opponent Patrick Ballantine (R-NC) during debate on this issue and lied to the public about the situation. (Video Clip Provided)

3. Seven illegal aliens carrying Easley's valid licenses have been charged with the gang rape of a 37 year old Huntersville, NC woman near Charlotte.

Documentation:
"NC License Issue Explodes: Illegal Alien Gang Rapists had Easley's Licenses."

TAKE ACTION

1. Forward this e-mail to ALL of your e-mail contacts asking them to do the same.

2. Post this link on websites and public forums around the state and nation.

3. Call your family members, neighbors and friends. Tell them what is happening since the media isn't telling them.

4. Call your local newspaper, TV stations and Radio stations. Direct them to www.ALIPAC.us and ask why they have not told you the full story about Mike Easley, Illegal Immigration in NC, the Gang Rape near Charlotte, and that the suspects were carrying valid NC licenses that Easley's policies allowed them to have.

Don't let Mike Easley walk away with this election while the public is kept in the dark.

Senator Fern Shubert Welcomes Discussion of Illegal Immigration

But Disagrees with President Bush’s Proposal to Legalize Illegals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 8, 2004

Contact: Senator Fern Shubert (704) 624-2720

Press Coordinator: Andrea Norberg (704) 243-2807 Web Address: www.ForFern.com

Senator Fern Shubert, a candidate for Governor, has made reducing illegal immigration into North Carolina one of her top issues. As a result of her study of the issue, she disagrees with President Bush’s proposal to reward the illegal aliens in the USA for breaking our laws by granting them legal status.

“We should not reward people for breaking the laws of our nation.” Senator Shubert said. “Doing so will encourage others to break the law. I support the President and I am pleased with his work as our Commander in Chief, but I strongly disagree with his proposal to grant legal status to illegal aliens.”

North Carolina has had the largest percentage increase in illegal immigration of any state in America. This unprecedented and massive wave of illegal immigration is having a negative impact on the state budget. Unemployment numbers reflect the unprecedented growth in job seekers.

“Just this week I was called by a lady in my county, in her fifties without a high school diploma, who has recently lost her job of many years. She’s looking for another job but very discouraged because there are so many people in the county now who are willing to work for next to nothing,” said Senator Shubert. “I understand that people from other lands want to come here, but they need to follow the law. Governor Easley has ignored the needs of North Carolina residents by making North Carolina the destination of choice for illegal aliens. By helping those here illegally, he has hurt our lifelong residents.”

“The key word is not immigration,” Senator Shubert said. “The key word is illegal. The federal government decides how many people can legally enter this country. The issue is whether it matters whether people come here legally or not. If it doesn’t matter, there is no point in discussing how many should be admitted. If we grant those who have come here illegally preference over those who are still waiting to come here legally, we are undermining the foundation of our government.”

Senator Shubert’s campaign was the first campaign for Governor to make illegal immigration a top issue. She has worked for some time to tighten driver license requirements at the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV). For years, illegal aliens have come to North Carolina because North Carolina willingly licenses illegal aliens. DMV periodically claims they are tightening up on license requirements, but it remains state policy to grant licenses to illegal aliens.

“The current Governor, Mike Easley, has rolled out the red carpet to illegal aliens in this state.” Senator Shubert said. “Recently he responded to my call for tighter rules at DMV, not with support for changes in the law, which permits licensing illegal aliens, but with another publicity campaign. The legal residents of North Carolina, and I think that includes most legal immigrants, do not want illegal immigration and they do not want those here illegally rewarded. If elected to serve as Governor, I will do all in my power to reduce illegal immigration and to oppose acts that reward people who break the law.”
