Secession? Really?

Published November 15, 2012

We get it. Folks aren't happy with Barack Obama's re-election. But seccession?

NC SPIN panelist John Hood declared this Internet campaign a colossal joke, saying even Elmo could sign the online petition. It is going to get the serious consideration it deserves...nada, zip, zero. But let's just assume for a minute those behind the movement are serious. What's their plan? Would North Carolina become a free-standing nation? If you think our taxes are high now wait until we have to assume all the diplomatic, commerce, legal, defense and financial obligations a nation would be forced to conduct.. One Facebook post suggested this might be the ideal time to try the self-deportation notion.

We tried secession once before and it didn't work out so well. Let's all agree these folks have had their 15 minutes of fame and get on with the more serious issues facing this land....like the fiscal cliff.

To hear our panel's response to this idea be sure to tune in this week's NC SPIN.

Mike Seivers says:

Concerning your opening question. You and both political party's have over looked the most important fact. Today individuals have a voice as NEVER before, the internet! That is where the fragmentation is coming from. You and the party's need to listen to what the individual have to say,(FINALLY) other wise you will continue talking about and forming your opinions from the SMALL groups to have in you circles.

The fiscal cliff, which I agree is a serious issue and needs to be addressed by our elected legislators. What concerns me is that congress continues to argue over how much someone should pay in taxes based on their income; rather than cut the excess spending of approximately 1.6 trillion every fiscal year. I believe taxes collected were close to 1trillion dollars, in 2011. We as a nation cannot operate within a trillion dollar budget? The people who cover and report on our elected officials, need to quit their own partisian reporting and report on government spending on all departments, including what Congress spends on itself. It is our free press that defends the citizen against the potential abuse and tyranny of our elected officials.
