Every year, at year's end, our NC SPIN panelists and I select one person or group to be named the NC SPIN Tar Heel of the Year. As you might expect, these selections often come from the political realm, however not always.

This year we decided we wanted to hear from you. Who would you choose as the one to receive this honor?

O.K., I'll give you the list of names that came from our panelists....not just the ones on last week's show but from all our panelists. Here they are in no particular order:

Congressman Mark Meadows, because of the role he has played in the US Congress this year.

Silent Sam, although not a real person, this statue has occupied much of the year's news.

Roy Cooper. Between hurricanes, floods and snow, as well as stormy conditions with our legislature  Governor Cooper has been very visible this year.

The thousands of volunteers, both North Carolinians and those from out-of-state, who came to our assistance during Hurricane Florence.

Peter Hans, President of North Carolina's Community Colleges.

Margaret Spelling, President of the University of North Carolina system.

Anita Earls, who with her election, will usher in a new era in our NC Supreme Court.

Dan Blue, the newly empowered minority leader of the NC Senate.

Dale Folwell, the State Treasurer and head of both the Teachers and State Employees Retirement System and always the State Health Plan.

NC's teachers, often under-appreciated.

Now let's hear from you. Who would you choose. We look forward to your answers.

BTW...be sure to watch this week's NC SPIN. We have a special half-hour interview with Governor Roy Cooper we recorded at the NC Academy of Family Physicians Winter Meeting at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville.
