After SPIN! - "Is new sales tax distribution another form of redistributing wealth?"

Published March 31, 2015

After SPIN! Video - Question to Doug Raymond: The Senate came forward with their plan to phase in the distribution of sales taxes based on population within a county. Urban Counties, already smarting from the loss of privilege taxes say this will force them to raise property taxes. Isn’t this another form of redistributing wealth? Is the Senate plan the right approach?

It's an admirable attempt to help rural NC. Why not give it a try? It gives rural cities a chance to attract industry rather allowing the big metropolises to hoard the money and expand their bloated bureaucracies. I'm confounded why democrats don't like this bill since they claim they want to help rural NC and some of the other Democrat attempts have failed (Golden Leaf, Global Transpark). Let the GOP have a try at helping with the problem. It's their turn. This seems like an equitable way to distribute the money to me, really only requiring some cities to make some cuts.

Richard L Bunce says:

All government taxes are a form of redistribution of wealth. Best solution for this particular tax is to get rid of it... or at least end the requirement for private business to do the governments dirty work and have the States residents send in a monthly check for their sales tax The mechanism is currently in place and is called the Use Tax that is universally ignored by the States residents. The sales Tax revenue allocated to the Counties and Municipalities would then be returned to the residents address.
