Charter school transparency

Eddie Goodall, executive director of the N.C. Public Charter Schools Association, voiced displeasure at a legislative measure the Senate unanimously approved this week to require charter schools to maintain open records and open meetings, just like all traditional public school bodies.

Goodall said charter schools are like small businesses and can't afford the sort of discord that public records will generate. A former state senator from Union County and a certified public accountant by training, he ought to know better.

The shareholders whose investments back a business have a valid interest in seeing the books. Taxpayers, whose dollars operate charter schools, should have this same right to access records and attend meetings.
