Red lights flashing

A special election in Texas a week ago grabbed Florida governor Ron DeSantis attention.

The Republican candidate spent $2.5 million while the Democrat spent $500,000. Trump had won the district by 17 points in 2024. But this election the Republican lost 57% to 43%. By 14 points.

Sometimes in politics, like real life, the day comes when you have to look hard truths straight in the eye: Trump won that district by 17 points. A Democrat won it by 14. That’s a 31 point swing. Why did that happen?

With red lights flashing, DeSantis said that loss was a warning. But with the floor collapsing beneath their feet a lot of Republicans buried their heads in the sand – not wanting to hear the answer.
