The world of weeds

In a parable a farmer sows seeds to raise a crop. That night, his enemy comes and sows weeds – his wheat grows up tangled in weeds.

His workers ask whether they should pull up the weeds – he says, No, pulling up the weeds would uproot the wheat – adds, Leave them until we harvest the wheat – then we’ll burn the weeds.

Christ explained the parable this way: The field is the world. The seeds are the faithful. The weeds were sowed by the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, when angels burn the weeds.

That’s a simple picture of the world we wake up in each morning. Tangled in weeds we read about corrupt politicians grasping for power, billionaires paying politicians for favors…while fathers and mothers, who love their children, suffer hardships sowed by greed and corruption.

When you open the newspaper in the morning it’s clear the parable is true – until the angels come, we live in a world tangled in weeds.
