A Blunder…

Last week at the summit in Davos not mincing words Canada’s Prime Minister told our NATO friends the conflict with the United States over Greenland is “a rupture, not a transition…the old order is not coming back.”
Sounding unsettling that struck a chord.
Meantime, in Berlin, Germany’s Chancellor was blunt too, warning Germans they can no longer count on the United States to protect them from Putin – that Germans had better get ready to protect themselves.
Over on the other side of the globe Japan’s got problems of its own, facing North Korea and China. Both with nuclear weapons. And, like Germany, Japan’s no longer sure it can count on the United States.
Hardly a soul walking around on two legs today lived through the hard war we fought against Germany and Japan – since then for eighty years we’ve been friends. And both Germany and Japan have done well. They have more wealth, bigger economies, than anyone on earth except the United States and China. But they don’t have a single nuclear weapon.
In a way, I guess it was inevitable: The grounds shifting beneath our feet. And it looks like, before long, we’ll have two more nations packing nuclear weapons.
Where does that leave us?
Let’s pray Japan and Germany remain our friends…otherwise, this row over our not owning Greenland may turn out to be a blunder.
