Reign of terror

Federal agents – and fear – have descended on North Carolina.

I’m old enough to remember when President Kennedy sent federal agents to protect Black Americans from racist cops and masked Klansmen.

Trump sends masked agents – why the masks? – to terrorize people who look Hispanic.

As Governor Josh Stein said, “This is not making us safer. It’s stoking fear and dividing our community.”

It’s no mystery why Trump is doing it.

He got slapped down in this month’s elections.

Then he had to back down on releasing the Epstein files.

A Carolina Journal poll showed his approval ratings down in North Carolina – 52.8% disapprove and 45.7% approve – and his hand-picked Senate candidate, Michael Whatley, down almost 9 points to Roy Cooper (47.3 to 38.6%).

The first episodes of Ken Burns’ new series The American Revolution shows that, from the beginning, Americans have been torn between two impulses.

One is the human propensity for greed, racism and cruelty.

The other is a uniquely American commitment to decency, democracy and human dignity.

Now, as before, Americans must choose.

Cruelty or decency?
