Republican legislators just did something that swing voters dislike most about them: “put loyalty to Donald Trump over loyalty to our country” – and loyalty to the people of North Carolina.
They re-gerrymandered Democratic Congressman Don Davis’ district so a Republican will win it – because Trump told them to.
In a recent poll of voters in 46 rural North Carolina counties, we tested 15 potential arguments against Republicans. Three worked best with Independents and swing voters – and, if they work in these conservative areas, they’ll work everywhere:
- “They put loyalty to Donald Trump over loyalty to our country” (51% agreed).
- “They put the billionaires and corporations first” (57%)
- “They market themselves on Christian values but unlike Christ, they hurt, not help the poor, are arrogant not humble, and are obsessed with making money for themselves, not servant leadership” (54%).
Republican legislators might reflect on Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Speaker Destin Hall admitted that the redistricting steal was done at Trump’s behest: “President Trump earned a clear mandate from the voters of North Carolina and the rest of the country, and we intend to defend it by drawing an additional Republican Congressional seat.”
The voters of the 2nd District gave Congressman Davis a mandate when they elected him.
But Hall and Senator Phil Berger (photo) overruled the voters – to serve Trump.
What arrogance.
Berger did it to save his political skin. He faces a tough primary next year against Sheriff Sam Page. He needs Trump’s endorsement. So, he did the King’s bidding.
But the King is fickle. Ask Thom Tillis.
With Trump, loyalty goes just one way – to him.
The poll, of 684 voters, was conducted August 24-28 by Stephen Clermont with Change Research in Washington. Stephen has been polling in North Carolina for 30 years. Tucker Middleton, a Raleigh-based media consultant, worked with us.
