What's good about North Carolina?

Hurricane Florence was devastating to Oriental, often called the Sailing Capital of North Carolina. Those in other parts of the state came to help cleanup and rebuild.

When Dorian hit our Outer Banks, folks in Oriental decided it was time to repay in kind. Keith Bruno, who owns Endurance Seafood, started talking about what could be done to help the Ocracoke watermen hit hard by the storm. Bruno and his wife Marianne decided to host a pig pickin’ fundraiser.

It quickly became a community affair, with so many participating it was hard to keep up with the list. The Piggly Wiggly donated a pig. Dave Sargent at M&M’s restaurant contributed buns and coleslaw. Walmart pitched in the paper goods and even the Public’s and Harris Teeter in New Bern participated with drinks, as did the local MiniMart. Craven Ag furnished a porta-potty.  A local band, Songs of the Road, entertained.

“The day was glorious,” Bruno said. More than 250 came out and contributed more than $10,000 to help the Ocracoke watermen.

This is a good story about good people helping others.

If you’ve got a story that tells what’s good about our state send it along and we will post it.
